KHARTOUM, Sudan — A Sudanese Christian who spent more than a year behind bars has walked free from one of the country's harshest prisons, but his ordeal is far from over. Amin Ismail was released from Kobar Prison in Khartoum, according to International Christian Concern (ICC), which reported his release on October 23.

Ismail had been detained since July 2025. According to ICC, he returned to the capital to visit his wife and was arrested the very next day. The organization says courts repeatedly found him innocent, yet he remained in prison for well over a year.

His imprisonment grew out of years of pressure on his father, Pastor Ismail Azzaz. ICC reports that the pastor fled Sudan after refusing to surrender church land amid government efforts to bring churches under state control. The son, it seems, paid a price for the father's stand.

“I thank God for my release, and I am deeply grateful to ICC for their prayers and the help they gave,” Ismail said in a statement published by the organization. “Their support played a big role in this miracle. I know it was the Lord who opened the door, and I continue to trust Him to take me safely out of the capital. Please keep praying for me and my family.”

That prayer is still urgently needed. ICC says Ismail's safety remains uncertain because he is still in Khartoum. The organization reported that people had attempted to arrange his release so that he could be killed outside the prison walls, though it did not identify those allegedly involved. ICC also reported that the circumstances of his detention included an alleged interest in his wife by a powerful man in the capital, and linked the case to the wider pressure on his father over church property.

Pastor Azzaz, who remains in exile, welcomed his son's release while continuing to fear for the family's safety, according to ICC. The organization has called for continued prayer for Ismail, his wife, and the rest of the family as he seeks a safe way out of the capital.

Ismail's case is part of a wider pattern of pressure on Sudanese Christians over church property and leadership. In September, ICC reported that authorities were seeking to transfer control of property belonging to the Sudanese Church of Christ's Marzouq branch in Khartoum, following years of government intervention in church governance. In October 2025, police in Atbara arrested Presbyterian evangelical pastor Daud Fudul Kachu amid a dispute over church property; he was released the following day after a church lawyer intervened, after police reportedly pressed him to sign a document agreeing not to oppose attempts to seize the property.

All of this unfolds against the backdrop of Sudan's war, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The fighting has devastated communities, destroyed church buildings, displaced church members, and made ordinary ministry enormously difficult. For Amin Ismail, freedom from prison is a genuine answer to prayer — but until he reaches safety beyond the reach of those who wish him harm, the church around the world has every reason to keep praying.
