Skillet frontman John Cooper believes something extraordinary is happening in mainstream rock music. In a recent interview with ChurchLeaders, the veteran Christian rocker said well-known musicians are quietly coming to faith in Jesus Christ — and beginning to talk about it openly.

Speaking backstage at Skillet's "Comatose 20 Years, Still Screaming Tour" in Detroit, Cooper shared that he had just learned another well-known musician had become a Christian. "I just found out another iconic musician became a Christian yesterday," Cooper said. He declined to name the musician, saying he was not sure he was permitted to say it publicly.

Cooper, whose band has now been together for three decades, says these are not isolated incidents. He told ChurchLeaders that spiritual conversations are happening behind the scenes across the rock industry, and that more influential musicians are beginning to profess their faith in Jesus.

The Skillet frontman also addressed an uncomfortable reality: some of these new believers do not yet look like the traditional picture of a Christian convert. Some still struggle with profanity or behaviors tied to their former lifestyles. Cooper urged believers not to let those shortcomings overshadow what he sees as genuine spiritual transformation.

He offered an example — without naming names — of a famous rock musician who became a Christian after years of substance abuse, adultery, and personal wreckage. Though the man's language still needs work, Cooper said, his life now bears clear fruit: a restored marriage, family members coming to faith, and other musicians being introduced to Jesus.

"I don't think that Christ would hear that conversation and say, 'My takeaway is the f-word,'" Cooper said, paraphrasing the Lord's likely response to critics focused on a new believer's rough edges rather than his redeemed life.

Cooper acknowledged he would like to see the musician's language change over time. But he said Christians should train their eyes to recognize the evidence of God's work in a person's life rather than demanding an overnight transformation that matches traditional church culture.

"God is doing all sorts of incredible things in this market," Cooper said. "It doesn't always look like the traditional Christianity."

Cooper made the remarks while discussing Skillet's new EP, "After the Storm," and the band's 30-year career. Skillet remains one of Christian rock's most successful acts, with two Grammy nominations and multiple Platinum-certified albums — and Cooper has become a prominent voice defending hard rock as a legitimate vehicle for the Gospel.
