Chick-fil-A will not be opening its doors on Sundays anytime soon — or ever, if the company's CEO has anything to say about it.

In an interview with TODAY, Chick-fil-A CEO Andrew Cathy said the fast food chain has never considered opening its restaurants on Sundays, and he has never even looked into the potential profits such a move could bring.

"And that's being truthfully honest with you. I never have because it's never something that we're entertaining. It's just too important for us," Cathy said, according to ChurchLeaders.

Cathy is the grandson of Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, and the son of Dan Cathy, the company's most recent CEO. Andrew Cathy took over as CEO in 2021. The company has remained privately owned by the Cathy family since its founding.

The Sunday closure dates back to the company's very beginnings. In 1946, Truett Cathy and his brother Ben opened a small diner called the Dwarf Grill in Hapeville, Georgia. They developed the recipe for what would become Chick-fil-A's signature chicken sandwich in 1967.

"My grandfather and his brother, Ben, when they started that little restaurant in Atlanta, it was very common back in the 1940s that a lot of places were closed on Sunday," said Andrew Cathy. "And so they wanted to do that. They wanted to have a chance to take a break, go to church—for others, just to take some rest."

Cathy said the Christian faith is Chick-fil-A's "anchor." He quoted the organization's purpose statement: "We're in business to glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that's entrusted to us and have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A."

Chick-fil-A has long held a reputation for strong customer service, though it has also faced criticism over the years for the company's past political support for a traditional view of marriage, with critics accusing the chain of being homophobic.
