Nathan Busenitz Officially Installed as Pastor-Teacher at Grace Community Church, Succeeding John MacArthur
A new chapter has begun at one of America's best-known churches. During Sunday worship on October 11, Dr. Nathan Busenitz was officially installed as pastor-teacher at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, succeeding the late Dr. John MacArthur, who died in July 2025 at age 86. Busenitz had been named to the senior pastor role in August.
The installation carried the weight of a sacred handoff. As the church's elders laid their hands on Busenitz, elder board chairman Chris Hamilton led the congregation in prayer: "We pray that you would grant him courage to preach your Word faithfully and use this beginning for your glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Scottish theologian Sinclair Ferguson preached the installation sermon, taking his text from 2 Timothy 3:10–4:5 and speaking on ministry succession, its responsibilities, and its burdens. Addressing Busenitz and every pastor listening, Ferguson said, "He has a very sobering and challenging calling in season and out of season. He is to preach the Word." He added that God will provide biblical wisdom and Christian mentors for the new senior pastor, just as He did for Timothy.
Busenitz is no stranger to the pulpit he now fills. He grew up attending Grace Community Church and holds multiple degrees from The Master's University and Seminary. He co-pastored the church's Cornerstone Fellowship and for several years assisted MacArthur with ministry and editing tasks. At The Master's Seminary, where he teaches historical theology, he also serves as dean of faculty and executive vice president. His books include "Living a Life of Hope," "Reasons We Believe," and "Long Before Luther."
His roots at the church run deep. Busenitz is the son of Dr. Irv Busenitz, an original faculty member, vice president, and academic dean at The Master's Seminary who continues to serve as a lay elder at Grace Community Church.
In a video recap of the installation service, Busenitz expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support: "I am so, so grateful for just the obvious outpouring of kindness. All of it is overwhelming and an incredible blessing and a kindness from all of you to me and my family and all for the glory of Christ."
He and his wife, Beth, have four children and two grandchildren.
