Jen Lilley: Hollywood Is Searching for Truth — and Christians Should Love Them Where They Are
Actress Jen Lilley believes Hollywood is full of people who are searching for truth — and she wants Christians to see them with compassion rather than contempt.
In a recent interview with ChurchLeaders, Lilley spoke about her heart for the entertainment industry, where she has worked for years in television and film, including roles on “Days of Our Lives” and in a string of Christmas movies. She said her perspective has grown more tender over time as she has gotten to know the people behind the cameras and on the sets.
“We always say Hollywood is so dark, and I’m like, yes it is, but I will say they’re searching. They’re searching for the truth,” Lilley said. She explained that many people in the industry believe they have made too many mistakes to turn their lives around, and she wants them to know that is not true.
“We come into agreement with the enemy and we think we’re too far gone. And it is not true,” she said. Her desire, she explained, is to show the love of Christ to people who may feel rejected or condemned — people who, in her words, are already judging themselves harshly.
“I have a fresh tenderness and empathy toward Hollywood to love them where they are because they’re already judging themselves, honestly,” Lilley said. She described meeting actor after actor who is searching hard for peace — trying retreats, meditation, and other pursuits — because they do not feel clean. “I have good news for you,” she said.
“So, I love Hollywood,” she added plainly.
Lilley also discussed her upcoming film, “Jimmy,” which opens in theaters nationwide on November 6. The film tells the story of legendary actor James Stewart, focusing on one of the most transformative stretches of his life: from winning the Academy Award for best actor for “The Philadelphia Story” to serving as a combat pilot during World War II.
Stewart flew 20 combat missions over Europe and rose to the rank of colonel before returning home emotionally devastated by what he had experienced in war. His return to Hollywood eventually led to his beloved role as George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Lilley portrays Stewart’s wife in the film, and she said many people do not realize how much Stewart gave in service to his country.
“What so many people do not know, and I didn’t know, is that he also was a war hero in World War II,” Lilley said.
Her message to believers is simple: the people of Hollywood are not beyond reach. They are searching — and the church has the very truth they are looking for.
