After a Decade of Athletes' Faith Stories, Jason Romano Answers God's Call to Something New

After nearly ten years of giving athletes and coaches a platform to tell their faith stories, Jason Romano is turning the page on his chapter at Sports Spectrum — and stepping into what he believes God has next for him.
Romano, a former ESPN producer who spent 17 years at the sports network, joined Sports Spectrum in February 2017 and launched its podcast that March with no prior podcasting experience. He did it all himself in the beginning — booking guests, editing episodes, hosting interviews, and running social media. Within nine months, the podcast had reached roughly 100,000 downloads.
Over the years, the show grew into a trusted space where sports figures shared their testimonies — including people, Romano says, whose faith stories might otherwise have gone unheard. That, he told ChurchLeaders, is one of the things he is proudest of.
His final Sports Spectrum podcast, an interview with former Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte, was released Tuesday.
Leaving was emotional. "It's bittersweet. I'm grateful. I'm so thankful to be a part of an amazing organization," Romano told ChurchLeaders. "I'll be the biggest champion and cheerleader for Sports Spectrum going forward that you could ever imagine."
But he also knows obedience matters more than comfort. "When God calls you away, it's important to be obedient to that," he said. In the interview he reflected on the relationships built over a decade and expressed confidence that God is calling him into a new chapter of ministry — one he says he is walking into in faith.
The world of sports is a massive mission field, and for years Romano used a microphone to point that world toward Christ. His departure is a reminder that the work of faith does not end when a role ends — sometimes God closes one door to open a wider one.
