550 Baptized in the Freezing Waters of Bridlington as Signs of Revival Grow in England
Five hundred and fifty people waded into the cold waters of Bridlington, England, over the weekend to publicly declare their faith in Jesus Christ through baptism. The gathering, held on the Yorkshire coast, is being described by its organizer as possibly the largest baptism Britain has seen in modern times, and the latest sign of a growing spiritual hunger across the United Kingdom.
The event was organized by Merlin Kraft, a Christian communicator behind the social media channel BibleLadUK. According to CBN News, Kraft held a similar baptism last month after a video he posted online brought a flood of requests from people wanting to be baptized. At that earlier gathering, held at Bigbury-on-Sea, hundreds traveled from across the country and more than 170 people entered the water.
This time the response was even greater. Five hundred fifty people took the step at Bridlington, cheered on by a large crowd of onlookers. Kraft, who baptized many of them himself, said his arm was sore afterward — but his joy was greater. "God turned up today and so did the people of North England," he declared immediately after the event.
Witnesses described a day marked by tears and laughter. As each person was baptized, emotions ranged from weeping to joy, and the crowd applauded them on. Kraft said the scene was unlike anything he had witnessed before. "The beautiful people that came... you could just feel the joy everywhere," he said. "It was truly a special, special day."
Kraft believes what happened at Bridlington is part of something much larger. "Something powerful is happening across Britain," he wrote afterward. "People are coming to Jesus Christ, publicly declaring their faith, and lives are being changed!" He added, "There's a real harvest out there," and said the team plans to take the baptisms to cities around the country. "Trust me, we're going around the country with this. This isn't stopping soon."
In conversations and messages from across Britain, Kraft said he is hearing from people who are opening Bibles for the first time, asking searching questions, and looking for hope in Jesus Christ. "I'm talking to more and more people, and I'm getting messages from people all over Britain who are opening Bibles and asking questions and looking for hope in Jesus Christ. And I think lots of churches are seeing it too," he said.
The Bridlington baptisms add to a series of reports from across Europe of renewed Christian fervor: tens of thousands have marched for Jesus in Paris, large gatherings have packed stadiums in Hungary and Italy, and thousands have given their lives to Christ in Germany and Sweden — one of the most secular nations on earth, according to CBN News.
For now, the image from a Yorkshire beach on a cold October day tells its own story: hundreds of people, shivering but smiling, choosing to be buried with Christ in baptism and raised to walk in newness of life — and a nation many had written off as spiritually cold showing signs of warming to the Gospel.
